Information Technology

The Information Technology department supports a full range of computing resources at Southeastern University. IT focuses on common services such as computing help, network services and telecommunications, helping members of the Southeastern community make effective use of information technology. We believe Southeastern students should graduate with a high level of technological competency to succeed in today's marketplace.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES:

  • Over 22 miles of fiber-optic and copper wiring, networking all dorms, classrooms and offices

  • High-speed, secure data network, capable of accommodating new technologies

  • Each student's room is wired for voice, cable TV, and high-speed network access

  • Voicemail system: conference calls, group messages, announcements and individual mailbox delivery

  • Web-accessible e-mail via Microsoft Exchange 2003

  • Dial-up access for off-campus students

  • Electronic-learning software that enables online teaching and learning, as well as institution-wide online campus communities via the computer application Blackboard

  • Wireless access in all academic areas and common areas of the campus

  • Technology-enhanced classrooms

  • All full-time faculty are equipped with a laptop computer to assist in communication and course delivery

  • Several computer labs and public access computers available

NETWORK & BACKBONE
Each building is connected by fiber-optic cable and is wired internally with copper cables certified to handle 100 BaseT Ethernet. All of the buildings on campus are interconnected with Cisco switches that provide a 1000 Mbs backbone and 100 Mbs network access to each user. The use of Cisco switches allows us to provide above-industry standard security and high-speed network/Internet access. The campus network fiber forms a ring, known as a Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) backbone; this circular design resists network failure by allowing data to travel an alternate route if a problem arises in one building on the network. The campus network provides connectivity and access to our fiber channel SAN (storage area network) and 30 Dell PowerEdge file servers located in the data center.
