PREPARING FOR AN EMERGENCY
There obviously may be little or no warning before a terrorist attack. Here are steps that Florida's seven Regional Domestic Security Task Forces and our Department of Safety & Security reccomend that people take to prepare for an emergency:
- Continue normal activities, but be aware of your surroundings. Exercise caution when traveling. Be aware of suspicious behavior and circumstances, such as unauthorized people in restricted areas and abandoned parcels, bags, vehicles or other items.
- Create backups of critical computer files and secure them off site. Don't rely strictly on the university's backup of your data.
- Be alert to suspicious activity, such as an individual expressing undue interest in your department's security preparations, and report it to the security department at (863) 667-5190 or (863) 712-3950. If off campus, contact the appropriate law enforcement agency.
- Establish an out-of-area friend or relative as a single point of contact to coordinate family messages.
- Create an emergency contact list for each family member to carry. This list should contain telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and pager numbers.
- Determine meeting places for department members, and review escape routes from your building.
- If you live in campus housing, prepare a disaster supplies kit to sustain yourself for three to seven days. It should include a supply of water, food, a flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered radio, a first-aid kit, duct tape and plastic sheeting, and critical documents. Also, be prepared to do without service that could be disrupted, such as electricity, water, telephone, natural gas, gasoline pumps and Internet access.
- Have an adequate supply of prescription medications.
- Be prepared to respond to official instructions if you're in the immediate area of a terrorist attack.
Several agencies offer extensive information about preparing for an emergency. Everyone in the university community should consult these sources and take appropriate measures to prepare for an emergency.
