Southeastern men's basketball team defeats NCAA Division I team

By Southeastern University

The Southeastern University men's basketball team made history in November by defeating NCAA Division I Savannah State University, 67-65, giving Southeastern its first victory over an NCAA D-I opponent in school history.

"This was an absolute team effort; everybody stepped up and accepted their roles," said Southeastern Head Coach John Dunlap.

Freshman Nate Marshall led the Fire with 13 points as he hit two three-point field goals during the November 21 game; Southeastern hit eight three-pointers that night.

The Fire shot 47% from three-point land and 45% from the floor for the game.

The Fire's only other player to score in double figures was senior Israel Galloway, who finished with 11 points and five blocks.

Southeastern has been on a roll, going 3-0 on its three-game road trip Thanksgiving week, and was 5-1 on the year as of November 22--its best start since 2005.

The Fire had 10 players score in the game and battled back from a 10-point deficit in the second half.

"Having 10 players score, it's such a team effort, and we were real good defensively," added Dunlap.

The Fire held Savannah State to just 44% shooting for the game and outrebounded Savannah State, 34 to 33.

Southeastern's only loss as of Thanksgiving came on November 15 to NCAA D-II Rollins College, and the Fire battled in that contest too, losing only 75-72.
