Intricacies and Wonder
A student may struggle to understand it, but through you she can learn how things grow through photosynthesis. While an agnostic teacher may teach evolution as fact, you can explain that there are other theories about our origin—and future. Whether it’s learning how cells divide to form new human life or exploring the bejeweled firmament on a clear, country night, you can demonstrate the laws, intricacies and wonders of creation as a science teacher.

In addition to deepening your knowledge of biology, physics and geology, as a middle grades science major at Southeastern, you’ll study techniques that will infect teens and pre-teens with a love for science. Once you graduate, your skills will be in high demand, for many schools struggle to fill openings for science teachers. Some states, such as Florida, even have programs to reimburse college tuition for students who enter the profession. If God has wired your mind for science, Southeastern can equip you to serve as a teacher and pass on appreciation for the handiwork of the Creator.

The Core and the Craft
Southeastern’s middle grades science program begins with our Christ-centered liberal arts (general education) core curriculum, where you develop an understanding and appreciation of God and His creation, human creativity and reason, and our place of responsibility as stewards in the world God has made. As you forge links between what you’ve learned in the core and the more specialized courses in your major, our hope is that you also begin to relate all that you learn to your life and your faith.

Within the middle grades science program itself, you’ll obtain an extensive education in instructional methods, class management and assessment as well as study the psychological foundations of learning and the social dimensions of the U.S. public school system. You also will deepen your knowledge of major branches of science by taking courses in human anatomy and physiology, astronomy, physics, and geology. Southeastern will arrange for you to spend many hours in local middle and high school classrooms where you will observe topnotch teachers, instruct students and be mentored. Your training will culminate with student teaching, a 14-week assignment to a classroom where you’ll plan and teach lessons and manage and assess learners.

What's Next?
Nearly all of our education majors earn Florida teacher certification, which enables them to teach in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and at Department of Defense schools. Our graduates serve as public and private school educators around the country and abroad in Germany, Italy, Korea, and Costa Rica. Some of our graduates choose to teach in human resources departments in the private sector. Whether you elect to seek employment or choose to go on for graduate study, you’ll join a growing group of Southeastern alumni who are making their mark in education and other fields. A degree in middle grades science education will equip you to work in the following capacities and fields:

  • Fifth- through ninth-grade science teacher in a public, private or Christian school
  • U.S. Department of Agriculture food inspection
  • Food service
  • Health insurance
  • Nutrition
  • Pharmaceutical sales
  • NASA physical science specialist
  • NASA quality assurance specialist
