FIRST Teams
The Freshman Experience Program

Everybody wants to play on the first team. At Southeastern University every freshman does. College can be a bit daunting even for the most sophisticated. University-level academic demands, new peers to meet, a roommate to get used to, and a life away from home are huge adjustments. This is precisely where FIRST Teams provides a bridge from home to campus life.

Each FIRST Team is an eight to twelve-member Freshman Interactive Reflective Small group Training Team. They are gender-separated small groups formed to give freshmen a little extra support. During orientation you’ll meet your leader as well as the other members of your FIRST Team group. Every Monday at either 9 a.m. or 9 p.m. your upper-class leader will meet with you and guide discussions about issues, such as relationships, procrastination, and fear. Your leader will also develop activities and talking points from your FIRST Team book Character Matters by Southeastern University President, Dr. Mark Rutland. Yes, you will be challenged, but you will also grow in character and leadership.

FIRST Team groups meet in dorm, conference and class rooms on campus and occasionally off campus and participate in special campus-wide programs such as the First City Celebration, a fall freshman variety show. Attendance at FIRST Teams earns required chapel credits for the freshman students.

For information about FIRST Teams chapel fines or exemption (available by application to the FIRST Teams office in Bolin Hall 122) see your student handbook.
