Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974

Southeastern University protects the privacy of student records, which include grades, schedules, student account, and campus life (e.g. counseling, disciplinary, chapel attendance) records, in accordance with the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974. Parents of children who are over 18 years old must ask their children to sign a FERPA Authentication Release Form to gain access to their children’s student records at Southeastern.*

Completed forms signed by students may be delivered in person, by fax at (863) 667-5200 (Attn: Office of the Registrar), or via mail to the following address: Office of the Registrar, Southeastern University, 1000 Longfellow Blvd. Lakeland, FL 33801.

After students submit a FERPA release form to Southeastern University, the university will disclose their student records to any caller (including parents, lenders, insurance companies, employers, etc.) who can provide three of the four following pieces of information:

• Student’s date of birth
• Course name that student is taking in the current term
• Student’s Southeastern University student ID number
• Student’s Social Security number

Southeastern University can release the following “directory” type information without having students sign a FERPA release form:

• Name
• Address
• Telephone number
• Date and place of birth
• Honors and awards
• Dates of attendance

Under FERPA, students who do not wish Southeastern University to disclose information such as that listed above may sign a form that forbids the university from even acknowledging they are students here. Students who wish to sign a non-disclosure form must first schedule an appointment with the Southeastern University Registrar by calling (863) 667-5015.

*Southeastern University can disclose student information to parents during the following extreme circumstances:

  • student presents serious danger, or is perceived to be a danger, to himself/herself physically, mentally or in any other way
  • student transported to hospital in life-threatening emergency or a professional in the Student Development department determinies the student is an immediate risk  to himself/herself or another person
  • student is victim of a crime
  • student commits disciplinary violation that results is a suspension or expulsion
  • student found purchasing, distributing, using, or possessing alchohol or controlled substances
