2007 Season Review

The 2007 soccer season saw the Lady Fire overcome numerous injuries to repeat as South Region champions for the first time in the SEU program's history.

SEU lost not only senior defenders Tara Ellis and Noel Reno for the season but also promising freshman Lauren Gutierrez.

However, despite all the injuries, SEU went 7-0-1 in the South Region and finished fifth in the country, SEU's third straight top five finish nationally.

At the 2007 NCCAA II National Tournament, the Lady Fire fell in the first round to Providence College with a 3-2 loss in a penalty kick shootout.

SEU would then go on to defeat No. 7 seed Cincinnati Christian College, 1-0, and then shut out No. 4 seed Maranatha Baptist Bible, 1-0, as well.

The Lady Fire did not allow a goal in regulation for the entire tournament.

Beth Seitz, Courtney Thomas, Jamie Willis, and Melissa Kennedy were all named First Team All-Region players, while Marla Stoltzfus, Tara Ellis, Lisa Kok, and Heather Conner all earned Second Team All-Region honors.

For the second straight year a Lady Fire player was named the South Region Player of the Year, this time Melissa Kennedy earning the honor.

Kennedy finished the season with a team-high 54 points, scoring 22 goals and adding 10 assists.

Stoltzfus was second on the team with 21 points (5 goals and 11 assists).

Head Coach Dominic Stross was named the 2007 South Region Coach of the Year. It was the second time in three years that Stross has earned that honor.

Southeastern will lose goalie Amy Delettre, defenders Noel Reno and Tara Ellis, and mid-fielders Sarah Loiacono, Amanda Wade, and Courtney Thomas due to graduation.

However, the future is bright as many young players earned valuable experience this season due to injuries to older players, and Coach Stross has a solid recruiting class coming in for 2008.
