SEASON OUTLOOK - 2007-2008
The Southeastern women’s basketball team looks to build on a record-setting 2006-2007 season in which the Lady Fire won its third South Region title in four years. SEU also finished a school-best third in the country last season, finishing with a 26-11 overall record. The Lady Fire has compiled a 100-49 record over the past four years and will return six of its top nine players from last year. In 2007-2008, seven new players join the six returners in an attempt to continue to establish a legacy of quality for the Southeastern program. Center Currie Powers, forward Heather Kitts, and two guards, Charity Kidder and Rebekah Cohen, serve as captains. The two other returners are forward Sarah Woesch and center Amanda Hudson. Both Coach Ed Plastow’s new recruits include transfer forward Desiree McKenzie, who previously played at Kennesaw State in Georgia. Also, Forward Casey Jensen, an All-American volleyball middle hitter for SEU, comes to SEU from Goddard, Kans., while guard Danielle Suarez is a true freshman and an All-County selection from Miami. Also included among the new recruits are forward Mandy Liebig, an All-Conference performer from Oak Ridge, N.C., and center Jeni Molitor, an Honorable Mention All-Conference performer playing her high school basketball in Midland, Mich. Two guards, Bethany King, a team captain from Vero Beach, Fla., and Melody Ussery, a multi-sport athlete from Kona, Hawaii, complete the recruiting class. All roster players are expected to contribute in Southeastern’s playing rotation. The Lady Fire’s schedule this year includes 20 games against NCCAA Division II schools, with 12 additional games against out-of-level competition, principally at the NAIA level. The women will travel to tournaments in Nashville, Tenn., and Springfield, Mo., in addition to other out-of-state games in Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, and North Carolina. They also host their own 5th Annual Southeastern Invitational Tip-Off Tournament, opening the season against defending national champion Kentucky Christian. Post-season play includes the regional tournament, to be held at Winston-Salem, N.C., and the national tournament, to be held at Grayson, Ky.
