Dee Stokes Named New Lady Fire Basketball Coach
(06-17-10)
LAKELAND, Fla.--Southeastern University has found its new women's basketball coach, and the mantle has fallen on Dee Stokes, the former head coach at NCAA Division I Winston-Salem State University. The decision was made this past Friday.
Stokes brings 16 years of coaching experience on the NCAA Division I level with her, with seven of those years serving as a head coach and winning 69 games.
"I had made an announcement earlier in the year that I thought God was calling me away from the grind of Division I basketball, to be closer to Him" said Stokes. "It also started [becoming clear] throughout last summer and this year that I wanted to work at a Christian school, and not just one in name, but one that was truly Christ-centered."
Stokes spent the past four seasons at Winston-Salem State University, in Winston-Salem, N.C. There, Stokes faithfully attended First Assembly of God of Winston-Salem, where former Vice-President of Student Life Dr. Mike Rakes is now the senior pastor.
"I knew from my home church, Winston-Salem First Assembly of God, that Southeastern was that kind of place," added Stokes. "I am happy to be a part of this university and to be a part of God's plan for my life and future."
Before arriving at Winston-Salem State, Stokes was an assistant coach at Winthrop University from 2004-2006, and she served as the recruiting coordinator for the Lady Eagles. Her recruiting efforts paid major dividends for the Lady Eagles, and her 2005 recruiting class became the most successful team in school history, making its first trip ever to the NCAA post season.
From 1998-2002, Stokes was the head basketball coach at East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. There, Stokes guided the Lady Pirates to three consecutive winning seasons, including a 16-13 record in 1998-1999, which was a seven game improvement from the year prior. It was also East Carolina's first winning season in six years as the team advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Championship.
Stokes was also a part of Team USA's Golf Medal team at the 2001 World University Games in Beijing, China. She served as an assistant coach under Debbie Ryan, the Head Coach of the University of Virginia.
She has also served as an assistant at Murray State, Nebraska, and Texas A&M University.
From 1989-1991, Stokes played basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference for Wake Forest University, then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1991. She went on to play for the 49ers from 1991-1993 and graduated with a bachelor of science in sociology in 1993.
In 2004, she completed her master's degree in public administration from DeVry University.
She has recently completed her Education Specialist (EdS) from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Her research interests included emotional intelligence, student engagement & motivation, and organizational behavior.
"Dee Stokes brings an impressive coaching resume to Lakeland with stops at Texas A&M, Nebraska, East Carolina, the USA Women's Basketball team, Winthrop, and Winston-Salem State," added Southeastern Athletics Director Duane Aagaard. "More important than her resume is her commitment to her faith. Ironically, Mike Rakes, Southeastern's former Vice President of Student Life, has served as Dee's pastor in Winston-Salem, N.C. We look forward to seeing the women's basketball program developed into a strong NAIA program in the upcoming years."
In 2007, Stokes also began to launch out with a writing career with "What Spirit Are You Following?," an internet article written for Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
She was also an author for the 2009 Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inside Basketball. 101 Great Hoop Stories From Players, Coaches, and Fans. Her article was entitled "Sideline MVP."
Stokes just completed her first book, which has yet to be published, entitled Experiencing GRACE: One Woman's Year Long Journey with God after the Death of Her Mother.
She feels a very strong calling on her life to serve God in a greater capacity and be involved in Christian Education. As a result of this calling, she believes God has instructed her to start Dee Stokes Ministries, A Worship Experience of Song, Prayer, and Devotion.
"We need to improve each day athletically, spiritually, and academically," added Stokes. "If we can do that, then we have made progress. We also need to continue to improve the talent level, which it looks like the last coach did a great job of and get to the point where we can compete each and every night."

Lady Fire Draws Clearwater Christian In South Region Tournament
(02-23-10)
LAKELAND, Fla.--Everything is now set for the Southeastern Lady Fire Basketball team. The Lady Fire now knows who it will play in the South Region Tournament, starting this Friday night. And the Lady Fire also knows the only way to advance to the NCCAA II National Tournament will be by winning this year's South Region Tournament.
The winner of the South Region Tournament locks up an automatic bid into the NCCAA II National Tournament in March.
Southeastern will take on Clearwater Christian College, Friday night, at 7:00 p.m. The two schools split their season series, and the Lady Fire most recently lost to the Lady Cougars, 83-76, back on February 9th, in Clearwater, Fla..
One major disadvantage for Southeastern is that this year's South Region Tournament will be hosted by Clearwater Christian, so Friday night's game is not on neutral soil.
Southeastern has lost games on its last two trips to Clearwater Christian's home turf, including a 66-51 loss to the Lady Cougars last year in February.
Southeastern grabbed the tournament's No. 2 seed, while the Lady Cougars pulled in the No. 3 seed.
This year's No. 1 seed will be Atlanta Christian College, which swept its season series with Southeastern. Toccoa Falls College is the No. 4 seed.
The 2010 South Region Tournament Championship Game will be on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Plastow Announces Retirement
(05-04-09)
LAKELAND, Fla.--Southeastern University Women's Basketball Coach Ed Plastow has retired from his position after seven seasons of coaching the Lady Fire.
Plastow led the Lady Fire to six consecutive 20-win seasons, four South Region titles, and five NCCAA II National Tournament appearances. He was named the South Region Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2006.
He compiled a 155-90 overall record with the Lady Fire and helped guide Southeastern to a school-record 26 wins in 2003-2004 and 2006-2007. In the 2006-2007 season, Plastow helped the Lady Fire finish third in the nation, which is the program's best finish ever.
"Coach Plastow represents what we, as coaches, want to accomplish in our responsibilities," said Kentucky Christian University Women's Basketball Coach Ron Arnett. "He cares more about his players than he does about winning and losing. I have interacted with his team on several occasions and I see that first hand."
Plastow also coached the Southeastern Men's Basketball program from 1999-2001, putting together a 44-33 record and a South Region championship. In 2000-2001, he also led the men's team to an NCCAA II tournament berth, in which Southeastern finished 6th in the country. Coach Plastow earned the South Region Coach of the Year honors in 2000-2001 for his work with the men's team.
"Ed's done a great job in advancing the sport of [men's and] women's basketball at Southeastern," said Southeastern Athletics Director Duane Aagaard, "Not only will he retire with the most victories in the history of the women's program but he was also instrumental in bringing the NCCAA II Women's Basketball National Tournament to Lakeland from 2004-2007."
Coach Plastow finishes his coaching career with a 199-123 overall record in 10 seasons.
"[Because Ed Plastow] is an outstanding coach, at Kentucky Christian we always know that Southeastern would give us their very best effort," stated Coach Arnett. "That competition was outstanding, and off the floor, it was friendship and respect that dominated. That attitude in the Southeastern players truly reflected Coach Plastow's heart for the Lord and for his friends."
Aagaard agreed, emphasizing Plastow's committment to the faith and the university. "It's easy to point to the six consecutive 20-win seasons," he said. "But Coach Plastow's and Shannon's deeper commitment to fulfilling Southeastern's mission statement is even more impressive in my mind."
