To develop Southeastern athletes holistically: physically, academically, and spiritually. As a department, we strive to foster character, servant leadership, and the development of life skills while providing a professional environment in Christian athletics.
Spiritual Development/ Discipleship:
Athletics is the vehicle that challenges student athletes to grow in their spiritual journey. Students will arrive on campus at various levels in their faith; our goal is for students to leave with a greater understanding of their God-given purpose, of who they are in Christ, and how they can serve others.
Athletic Excellence:
To quote Southeastern President Dr. Mark Rutland, “If you are not playing to win, why keep score?" The athletic department will constantly seek to provide the most professional atmosphere for our athletes and coaching staff so they may compete at the highest level. While we will continue to pursue athletic excellence, this is not a “win-at-all-cost" institution. It is a “character-at-all-cost” institution.
Academic Development:
"Student athletes" is a term taken very seriously at Southeastern University. In 2004-05 the athletic department’s G.P.A. was an amazing 3.01. Students are required to participate in weekly study hall programs until their grade point averages surpass 2.5. While academic success will be celebrated, our goal is to see student athletes applying themselves to their studies while ultimately earning a college degree.
Christian Service Projects:
Each athletic program participates in a monthly Christian service project in central Florida. We believe in modeling Christ’s servant leadership approach to reach our community.
Leadership Development:
The Leadership Institute will focus on developing our student athletes into leaders. Each fall every captain participates in a three-day leadership retreat hosted at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort. Each retreat is designed to equip student athletes to become servant leaders among their teammates while serving as mentors for younger athletes.
Spiritually, the athletes will be challenged to learn what it takes to be Christians in an increasingly secular world. Emotionally, the athletes will have the opportunity to be mentored by different coaches, professors, and staff of the university so life-to-life mentoring occurs. Through this process the athlete will be nurtured in an environment where they are encouraged to grow into leaders on and off the court.
Recruiting:
Our coaching staffs stress locating athletes with strong Christian character as they actively recruit within Florida and across the nation. We strongly believe there is a surplus of athletes looking for a university that will push them both athletically and spiritually.
Life Skills:
The athletic department, in conjunction with the NCAA, has launched a life skills initiative that offers monthly seminars. The seminars tackle issues that student athletes face, such as selecting a major, time management, health and nutrition, personal finances, interviewing/resumes, sport psychology, deeper spirituality, and character development. |
