SEASON REVIEW, 2007-2008 The Southeastern University men's golf team continued to make history in 2007-2008. Competing against scholarship schools, the Fire won the school's first-ever NCCAA National Championship by shooting a 597 (298-299) at The Hombre in Panama City, Florida. SEU won the 2007 NCCAA National Tournament by nine shots overall and carried that momentum into the rest of the season. One of the program's greatest feats was winning the 2007 Lake Wales Fall Classic, besting all NAIA Florida Sun opponents. The Fire shot a school-record two-day total of 569 (279-290), beating second place team Warner Southern College by 15 shots. Southeastern compiled a 67-15 overall record in the fall season with a 297.14 overall scoring average. In individual honors, Junior Matt Parziale won the 2007 NCCAA National Tournament by firing a three-under-par 141 (70-71). Parziale also won the 2007 Fire Classic in a playoff over Embry-Riddle's Don Sciotto, finishing the tournament with a 144 (73-71). Parziale was named the 2007 South Region Player of the Year for the third season in a row and a First Team All-American for the second season in a row. Freshman Sean Metcalf won the 2007 Lake Wales Fall Classic with a two-day total of 139 (68-71). Senior Graeme Nelson was named to the all-tournament team as he and freshman Nate Mosby both shot 143 for the tournament. Despite losing some talented players from this year's team, Coach Gibson will look to build on returning players Parziale and Mosby for the future as he brings in one of the most talented recruiting classes in school history. The Fire will be without seniors Ryan Carriss and Graeme Nelson next season. Both players helped build the Southeastern golf program over the past four years, guiding Southeastern to three NCCAA II titles and the school's first NCCAA National Championship in 2007. |
