SEASON OUTLOOK - 2008-2009 The 2007-2008 season saw the Fire once again make school and NCCAA history. The 2007-2008 golf team became the first in school history to win an NCCAA D-I National Championship, taking the title by shooting a two-day total of 597 in the 2007 NCCAA National Tournament in Panama City. Southeastern also became the first NCCAA D-II school ever in the history of the NCCAA to win an NCCAA D-I national championship. Now the Fire will have to look to five new freshmen in order to repeat as NCCAA D-I national champions, having lost Graeme Nelson and Ryan Carriss to graduation this past year. Some of the good news for Fire fans is that two-time NCCAA All-American Matt Parziale returns for his senior season. Parziale was named the 2007 NCCAA National Player of the Year, becoming the first Southeastern athlete to win the award--and he did it versus NCCAA D-I schools. Parziale won two tournaments last season and had seven top-10 finishes. Also returning are sophomores Nate Mosby, Cris Simanca, and Chris Burke. Mosby played in all 11 tournaments last season and put together a season scoring average of 76.0. He also had a top-five finish in the 2007 Lake Wales Fall Classic. Simanca played in seven tournaments as a freshman, and Burke is a transfer from NCAA D-II University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Head Coach Evan Gibson brought in his best recruiting class since being named head coach of the program back in 2005. The 2008 recruiting class is led by Polk County Player of the Year Drew Mathews. Mathews was heavily recruited by many Florida schools, but chose the Fire, and he will be a serious contributor right away as a freshman. Joining Mathews in this year's class are Trey Echols, Kevin Pladna, Matthew Madsen, and Evan McIntosh. |
