FIRE LANDS COMMITMENT FROM BREVARD'S JENKINSON Fire Head Golf Coach Steve Phelps recently landed a verbal commitment from Brevard Community College's Matthew Jenkinson. Jenkinson is a great land for the Fire as he played the past two seasons at BCC, one of the best junior college golf programs in the state. Jenkinson averaged 75.9 this season for the Titans, which includes a low round of two-under-par 70, in the final round of the 2010 Titan Winter Invitational. He plans on majoring in business at Southeastern and finished his two years at BCC with a 3.8 GPA. "I look forward to Christ using SEU to help build my faith in Him so that He can shine through me," stated Jenkinson.
Burke Named to all-conference Team
Junior, Chris Burke, was named to the 2010 Men's Golf All-Conference team this year. Burke becomes the first Southeastern golfer ever to be honored with the award. The conference uses a simple system of totalling scores from the conference's four major golf tournaments during the year. The top 10 scorers from those four tournaments become All-Conference players. This year 11 players were named to the All-Conference Team because of ties. The four major conference tournaments this year were the Wilmington Island Intercollegiate, the 2010 Start to Finish Tournament, the 21st Annual Eagle Invitational, and the 2010 Sun Conference Tournament Championship. Over those four conference major tournaments, Burke totalled 897, for a 12 round average of 74.7. Burke's best conference finish was in the Start-to-Finish Tournament, at the Lake Wales Country Club, February 6-8. Burke tied for seventh place overall after he shot a 223 (76-74-73). mathews wins 21st annual eagle invitational
The Fire also had a nice showing overall, but a second round 312 cost Southeastern a chance at the tournament crown. Southeastern finished in fourth place, just three shots out of third place and five shots from tying for second. Southeastern fired a three-round total of 903 (296-312-295) Mathews shot a two-over-par 73 in round one, which put him two shots behind tournament leader Frank Berzanskis of Brevard Community College after round one. But Berzanskis posted a 79 in round two while Mathews put together a 74 in tough conditions. Still, Mathews found himself tied for fourth place in the tournament at 147 after round two, three shots off tournament leader Arvid Bengtsson. In the final round, the one that mattered most, Mathews shot a two-under-par 70, which helped him leapfrog Bengtsson and two others to take the tournament by three shots with a 217. The round of 70 was the best round of the tournament, and Mathews' 217 was just one over par for the tournament overall. The tournament field consisted of 18 teams and over 100 players. It is Mathews' third top-five finish of his career. His best collegiate finish prior to Sunday's victory came back in the fall of 2008 when he finished in second place at the 2008 Chick-fil-A Intercollegiate at Coosa Country Club, in Rome, Ga.
