Fire Falls Short In National Title Game, 68-65
(03-13-10)
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--The dream of another NCCAA II National Championship for Southeastern University came up just short, Saturday evening, as the Fire fell to the defending NCCAA II National Champions, Grace Bible College, 68-65.
The Fire gave the defending national champs all they could handle, and led the majority of the game.
After trailing 16-10 in the first half, the Fire closed out the half on a 20-12 run and took a two-point lead into halftime, 30-28.
In the second half, Southeastern's quickness helped the Fire take an eight-point lead, 44-36, with just over 12 minutes to play.
"They were just so quick; we told our guys they can't skip a pass through the double team, because these guys will steal it," said Grace Bible Coach Gary Bailey.
But Grace Bible's Ryan Dame scored six straight points and helped Grace tie the score, 46-46, with just over 10 minutes to play.
The game would have eight lead changes and two ties the rest of the way until Grace broke a 61-61 tie when NCCAA All-American Allen Durham scored inside to give the Tigers a 63-61 lead.
After a Grace Bible defensive stop, Ryan Krombeen scored inside, giving the Tigers a 65-61 lead with just 1:45 remaining.
On Southeastern's next possession, Malcolm Pollock caught a lob pass for a dunk off an inbounds play to make the score 65-63 with 1:10 left to play.
But, down the stretch, Southeastern could not seem to get the big defensive stop, as Durham once again scored to give the Tigers a 67-63 lead with under a minute to play.
Nate Marshall tried to answer with a midrange jumper, but missed. After several tip-in attempts, Southeastern's Marlon Austin came down with the rebound and scored, making the score 67-65.
The Fire decided to play defense with the shot clock still in play, and the defense forced Cory Jamieson to force a three-pointer that missed, but Jamieson raced to the basket and grabbed his own rebound. Southeastern was then forced to foul, and the Fire put Dame on the line with 19.4 seconds remaining. Dame hit one of two free throws to give Grace a 68-65 lead.
"We got the person to shoot the ball we wanted, but we didn't get the rebound," said Fire Head Coach John Dunlap.
After a Southeastern timeout, Marshall took the game-tying three-pointer and missed, but Southeastern came away with the ball and called timeout with 4.5 seconds left. Off of the inbounds, Southeastern swung the ball to Austin, who fired from about 25 feet out. As the game-tying three-pointer missed the bulls-eye, Grace Bible celebrated its third NCCAA II National Championship since 2006.
"It was just one possession, just a couple of little things that made the difference," added Dunlap.
Marshall led Southeastern with 16 points, while Pollock finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Austin finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while Arthur Jackson added eight points and seven rebounds. Jackson got into foul trouble midway through the second half when Grace Bible started to make its comeback run.
Durham finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Dame scored all of his seven points in the second half.
"Southeastern is going to do amazing things in the NAIA," stated Bailey. "They are just so talented."
Grace Bible (Grand Rapids, Mich.) ends its season with a 28-10.
Southeastern finishes the year with a 24-11 record and will join the NAIA's Sun Conference next season, which eliminates the Fire from playing on the NCCAA II level.
The National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association has two divisions, division one and division two. The division one level is for schools that give athletic scholarships; division two is made up of non-scholarship schools. Southeastern will begin giving athletic scholarships for basketball next season, which means Southeastern will no longer be able to play on the NCCAA II level.
Southeastern leaves the NCCAA II with one national championship and six top-five national finishes.
Survive And Advance Part Two: Fire Advances To National Title Game
(03-12-10)
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--Survive and advance part two for Southeastern University. The Fire advanced to the NCCAA II National Championship game with another come-from-behind victory, Friday night, this time overcoming Southwestern Christian University, 68-65.
Jordan Witte knocked down a three-pointer to tie the score, 60-60, with just 2:15 remaining. Then, Nate Marshall gave the Fire its first lead of the second half on a jumper with just 1:13 remaining.
Southwestern Christian had built a 58-52 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the contest before Fire Head Coach John Dunlap took a timeout to regroup. The Fire then closed out the game on a 16-7 run, a run that sends the team to just its second NCCAA II National Championship game in school history.
But it was far from easy for the Fire. With a 64-63 lead and just 38.2 seconds remaining, Southeastern's Dyami Thurman fouled Josh Gamblin, putting Gamblin at the free throw line with a chance to give the Eagles the lead. Gamblin converted both free throws to give Southwestern Christian a 65-64 edge.
Southeastern looked to junior Nate Marshall in the clutch, and once again he delivered, hitting a midrange jumper with 20 seconds left to put the Fire up, 66-65.
After a loose ball fight on the floor, Southwestern Christian was given the ball with 10.5 seconds remaining thanks to the possession arrow.
Southwestern Christian went for the win, as Gamblin fired a deep three-pointer. His shot missed, the rebound pulled down by Southeastern's Arthur Jackson, who was immediately fouled. Jackson stepped up to the charity stripe with 4.9 seconds left.
With the pressure on, Jackson hit both free throws, giving the Fire a slim 68-65 cushion. The Eagles would now need to go the entire length of the court to tie the score.
Gamblin pushed the ball up court and dished off to an open Reimond Prince, who got a good look from three-point land for the tie. The ball was up and away, but Prince missed the shot, sending Southeastern into a celebration for a chance to compete for another NCCAA II National Championship.
"You know, again, I can't say enough about Southwestern Christian and Coach Mark Arthur, and how hard they played," said Dunlap. "It is just a great feeling getting a win like that, being down all game."
But, being down all game was not entirely true. Southeastern started the game on a 13-0 run, but squandered the lead and trailed 33-31 at the half.
"Our guys just find a way to win," added Dunlap. "Our defense really picked it up in the second half again."
The Fire scored 17 points off of 20 forced turnovers in the game.
Southeastern seems to play its best basketball while trailing in the second half.
Southeastern trailed by 10 points at the half in Thursday night's national quarterfinals game versus Portland Bible College, but also rallied in the second half of that game to win, 84-72, in overtime.
Southeastern trailed Clearwater Christian at the half during this year's South Region Tournament before blitzing the Cougars, 52-26, in the second half.
"It was defense, defense, defense, in the second half, and then a guy making a play with five seconds left on the shot clock," stated Dunlap.
Malcolm Pollock led Southeastern with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. Marshall, who scored 36 points Thursday night, was held to just 13 points and three assists. But Marshall still left his signature with his two clutch jumpers down the stretch that helped the Fire win Friday night's game.
Jackson chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Witte finished with nine points on three three-pointers.
The free throw line was not kind to Southeastern, Friday night, as the Fire went just 12-for-22, a stat which almost cost Southeastern the game.
The Fire will play No. 1 seed Grace Bible College or host school No. 4 seed Central Bible College, Saturday, for the 2010 NCCAA II National Championship.
Grace Bible defeated the Fire in last year's national semifinals, 71-60, and Grace has won the past two NCCAA II National Titles.
Saturday's championship game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Southeastern (24-11) won the NCCAA II National Championship in its only national championship appearance back in 2005 when the Fire defeated North Central University, 104-99.
Survive And Advance: Fire Defeats Portland Bible, 84-72, In Overtime
(03-11-10)
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--Survive and advance is what March Madness is all about--and that is exactly what Southeastern University did Thursday evening in the NCCAA II National Quarterfinals, winning in overtime, 84-72, over No. 6 seed Portland Bible College.
The Fire trailed by double-digits early before closing the lead to seven points with under a minute to play in the first half. But Portland's Stephen McCall knocked down a three-pointer at the end of the half to give Portland Bible a 39-29 halftime lead.
Southeastern rallied in the second half thanks to Nate Marshall's hot shooting. Marshall became unguardable in the second half, scoring 25 points and helping the Fire come back and take the lead. He finished with a game-high 36 points, going 13-for-17 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Marshall also pulled down six rebounds.
"Nate Marshall was incredible tonight," said Fire Head Coach John Dunlap. "We knew they were going to be very good and that this was going to be a tough game."
But despite Marshall's heroics, the Fire squandered a 62-57 lead with 1:35 remaining. Portland Bible began fouling Southeastern and the Fire went cold from the free throw line, allowing the Wildcats a chance to come back.
Portland's Austin Hodges knocked down a three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to make the score, 62-60. Next, Portland fouled Southeastern's Dyami Thurman, who missed his two free throws, giving Portland a chance to tie or take the lead.
Portland's Stephen McCall went for the victory, shooting a three-pointer that missed, and Lakeland's Julius Williams grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled. Williams knocked down both free throws, giving the Fire a 64-60 lead with under 30 seconds remaining.
On Portland's next possession, Hodges delivered again, knocking down another three-pointer with just 19.3 seconds remaining to bring Portland within a point, 64-63.
The Fire got the ball into the hands of Marshall off the inbounds, and Portland fouled immediately. Marshall hit both free throws making the score 66-63 in favor of Southeastern.
Dunlap decided to foul in order to keep Portland from having a good look from three-point land to tie the game. Southeastern put Hodges on the line for a one-and-one, and he connected on his first free throw to make the score 66-64 with just 3.2 seconds remaining.
After a Portland Bible timeout, the Wildcats decided to miss the second free throw intentionally and go for an offensive tip in. And that is exactly the break the Wildcats received, as Joshua Swink grabbed the offensive rebound and put up a shot attempt that missed, but Portland's Robert Cochran tipped in the miss to tie the score at the buzzer, 66-66.
Despite the disappointment, Southeastern left little doubt in overtime, scoring the first seven points and holding the Wildcats to just six points in the extra session.
After a three-pointer by Portland Bible cut Southeastern's overtime lead to 73-69, Thurman pulled up for three on the break and connected, giving the Fire a commanding 76-69 cushion.
The Fire built its lead to over 10 points in overtime by knocking down free throws down the stretch.
Southeastern now advances to the NCCAA II National Final Four for the second consecutive year.
Malcolm Pollock finished the game with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Arthur Jackson added 10 points, and Thurman finished with 11 points.
Williams finished with five points and 11 rebounds off the bench, while Bartow's Marlon Austin added six points and six rebounds.
"We shut down their top scorers in the second half, and that really was the difference," added Dunlap. "Our experience really came through for us in overtime also."
Southeastern (23-11) will play No. 7 seed Southwestern Christian University, Friday evening, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
The Fire defeated Southwestern Christian in last year's national quarterfinals, 92-79, advancing to the Final Four. Southwestern Christian University defeated No. 2 seed Valley Forge Christian University, 85-81, Thursday afternoon.
This is the last year Southeastern University can compete in the NCCAA II National Tournament. Next year the Fire will begin giving athletic scholarships, which will prevent it from competing on the NCCAA II level.

Fire Earns No. 3 Seed For NCCAA II Nationals
(03-02-10)
LAKELAND, Fla.--Fresh off the 2010 NCCAA II South Region Championship, Southeastern Head Coach John Dunlap, received the news Sunday night that the Fire will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NCCAA II National Tournament in Springfield, Mo., March 9-13.
Southeastern has a record of 22-11 and a 17-2 record versus NCCAA II teams. Southeastern is also on a nine game winning streak and went 15-1 in the spring semester.
The Fire will play on Thursday, March 11th, at 4:00 p.m., facing the winner of No. 6 seed Portland Bible College and No. 11 seed Atlanta Christian College.
Atlanta Christian is a fellow South Region member, a team the Fire went 3-0 against during the season, including a 96-55 drumming of the Chargers in the South Region Championship game Saturday.
Grabbing the tournament's No. 1 seed will be defending NCCAA II National Champions, Grace Bible College. Grace Bible defeated Southeastern last year, 71-60, in the 2009 NCCAA II National Semifinals.
The No. 2 seed will be Valley Forge Christian College, which lost to Grace Bible in last year's national championship game, 74-72.
Host school Central Bible College will be the No. 4 seed.
The national tournament is comprised of 12 teams, with the top four teams earning valuable byes in the first round.
Southeastern has won the NCCAA II National Championship just once in school history, back in 2005 when the Fire defeated North Central University, 104-99. The Fire was the tournament's No. 1 seed that year, also earning a first round bye.
The 2005 NCCAA II National Championship was also hosted by Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo.

Southeastern Captures South Region Title
(02-27-10)
KISSIMMEE, Fla.--Southeastern University captured its first South Region Championship since 2006, Saturday afternoon, with a blowout victory over Atlanta Christian College, 96-55, at the Kissimmee Civic Center.
The Fire has now won nine straight games and will now earn an automatic bid into the 2010 NCCAA II National Tournament, March 9-13, in Springfield, Mo. The automatic bid could also see the Fire earn a first round bye in the 12 team national tournament.
Southeastern shot 56% from the field for the game, including 60% in the second half. The second half was the story of the tournament overall for the Fire, as the team continued to blitz its opponents defensively and offensively up and down the court.
Friday night's game against Clearwater Christian showed glimpses of what was to come in the championship game Saturday. Southeastern held Clearwater Christian to just 19% shooting in the second half, Friday, and then held Atlanta Christian to just 26% shooting in the second half Saturday, including a measly 4-of-27 shooting from three-point land.
The second half of both games saw Southeastern double the scores of its opponents, 52-26 against Clearwater Christian and 55-27 against the Chargers.
The Fire demonstrated a balanced offensive attack, with four players scoring in double-figures. Malcolm Pollock led the Fire with 16 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and four steals.
Nate Marshall and Dyami Thurman added 15 points apiece, while Marlon Austin added 13 points and five assists.

Fire Advances To South Region Championship Game
(02-26-10)
KISSIMMEE--Southeastern University used a huge second half to run to a, 92-72, victory over Clearwater Christian College and advance to the 2010 NCCAA II South Region Championship Game.
The Fire trailed Clearwater Christian 46-40 at the half, but was able to outscore the Cougars, 52-26, in the second half. The Southeastern defense can be credited with the big turnaround as they held the Cougars to just 19% shooting in the second half.
Nate Marshall led all scorers with 25 points while Malcolm Pollock added 21 points, eight assists, five rebounds, four blocks, and three steals.
Julius Williams came off the bench to score 13 points and pull down 10 rebounds while Dyami Thurman added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Fire pushed their winning streak over Clearwater Christian to 19 games, last losing to the Cougars back in 2003.
Southeastern will play the winner of No. 2 seed Atlanta Christian College and No. 3 seed Wesley College, Saturday, at 2:00 p.m. The winner will take an automatic bid into the 2010 NCCAA II National Tournament, March 9-13, in Springfield, MO.
With a top five national ranking, and an overall 21-11 record, Friday night's victory most certainly solidifies Southeastern's chances of advancing to this year's national tournament with at least an at-large bid.
A win in Saturday's championship gameccould give the Fire a first round bye in the national tournament, and give Southeastern their first South Region Championship since 2006.
Fire Rolls Past Piedmont Baptist, 111-60
(02-25-10)

The Fire led 54-25 at halftime and lit up the scoreboard for 57 points in the second half.

Twelve different Southeastern players scored in the game, Dyami Thurman, Marlon Austin, Jared Stewart, and Malcolm Pollock all scoring nine points apiece.
Lakeland's Julius Williams scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Southeastern locked up the No. 1 seed for the upcoming South Region Tournament this past Thursday when the Fire defeated Atlanta Christian College, 94-80, in Atlanta.

Fire Locks Up No. 1 Seed With Victory Over Atlanta Christian
(02-19-10)
ATLANTA, Ga.--Southeastern University defeated Atlanta Christian College, 94-80, Thursday afternoon to lock up the No. 1 seed for the upcoming South Region Tournament.
Thanks to a second half offensive explosion, Southeastern defeated the Chargers for the second time in six days.
The Fire trailed, 42-35, at the half as Atlanta Christian shot 50% from the field and went 12-of-15 from the free throw line. Southeastern went just one time to the free throw line in the first half.
In the second half, Southeastern shot 63% from the field and erupted for 59 points. The Fire also got to the free throw line, going 11-for-15.
Five players scored in double-figures for Southeastern, Malcolm Pollock leading the way with 23 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Dyami Thurman chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Atlanta Christian's Tory Wooley led all scorers with 24 points and seven rebounds. Wooley went 11-for-12 at the charity stripe.
Southeastern (18-11, 13-2) will travel to play Florida Christian College, Saturday, to end its regular season. Win or lose on Saturday, Southeastern still holds the tie-breaker with the Chargers for the South Region Tournament's No. 1 seed because of the head-to-head record.
This year's tournament will be hosted by Florida Christian College, February 26-27, in Kissimmee, Fla..
Pollock, Jackson Lift Fire Past Wesley College, 79-64
(02-13-10)
LAKELAND, Fla.--The Southeastern University men's basketball team earned a big victory, Saturday afternoon, over South Region rival Wesley College, 79-64, capitalizing on big games from Malcolm Pollock and Arthur Jackson.
The two players combined for 38 points and 22 rebounds, helping the Fire make up for a poor outside shooting game. Southeastern shot just 1-of-8 from three-point-land, but Pollock and Jackson managed to score inside for the Fire to pull away in the second half.
Pollock finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Jackson had his best game of the season, scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds. Jackson also went 7-of-10 from the field.
Southeastern earned a convincing win despite Fire leading scorer Nate Marshall being held in check with just six points. Marshall went just 1-for-11 from the field.
The Fire also avenged a 103-100 overtime loss to Wesley College back in November in Mississippi.
Marlon Austin and Dyami Thurman both scored 12 points and dished out four assists apiece. Austin also pulled down eight rebounds.
The victory helps the Fire come closer to clinching the No. 1 seed in the upcoming South Region Tournament, February 25-27, in Kissimmee. Southeastern holds its own destiny in its hands: a victory next Thursday in Atlanta versus Atlanta Christian and a win Saturday over Florida Christian clinches the No.1 seed.
Southeastern is now 17-11 on the year and 12-2 in the South Region.
Late Run Pushes Fire Past Chargers
(02-12-10)
LAKELAND, Fla.--A late second-half run helped lift Southeastern University past Atlanta Christian College, 77-63, in a pivotal South Region game in the Southeastern Sportsplex Friday night.
With Atlanta Christian leading 60-57 with just 4:30 remaining, the Fire closed out the game on a 20-3 run.
Marlon Austin tied the game, 60-60, after drawing a foul and making the basket. Then, Southeastern's Paul Austin hit a three-pointer off an assist by Arthur Jackson to push the Fire in front for good.
Nate Marshall scored 14 second half points and came up with some huge baskets down the stretch. Marshall finished with 20 points and six steals. He also moved into sixth place all-time on the Southeastern scoring list, moving past Winter Haven's Sherman Merricks. Marshall is also shooting a remarkable 91% from the free throw line this season, and went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe versus the Chargers.
The Fire led for most of the game and took a 35-29 halftime lead into the locker room. But the Chargers kept hanging around and did a nice job defensively, holding the Fire to just 37% shooting in the second half.
However, Southeastern did everything they could to get to the free throw line in the game. Southeastern went 26-of-35 on the night from the line, compared to just 12 free throw points made by Atlanta Christian.
Malcolm Pollock finished the game with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. Julius Williams came off the bench to score 15 points, pull down seven rebounds, and also get two steals.
Atlanta Christian's Jamal Brunson scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
With the victory, Southeastern controls its own destiny in pursuit of locking up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming South Region Tournament, February 25-27, in Kissimmee, Fla.
Southeastern (16-11, 11-2) could take one step closer with a victory, Saturday, versus rival Wesley College. The Fire lost to Wesley, 103-100, in an overtime game back on November 23rd in Florence, Mississippi. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Crucial Weekend For Fire
LAKELAND--The Southeastern Men's Basketball team has a huge weekend ahead, with two games that could determine the Fire's post season fate.
The Fire enters this weekend on a hot streak, scoring a combined 228 points versus Piedmont Baptist College and Toccoa Falls College last weekend, defeating the two schools by an average of 58 points.
However, the games this weekend should be a much tougher feat, as the Fire hosts Atlanta Christian College, Friday night, followed by Wesley College on Saturday.
The upcoming South Region Tournament's No. 1 seed will be on the line this weekend. Southeastern, Atlanta Christian, and Wesley College all have two losses in South Region play. ACC and Wesley, split their regular season games, while Wesley holds a 1-0 series lead over the Fire. Wesley defeated Southeastern, 103-100, in overtime back in November.
Southeastern and Atlanta Christian will play twice over the next week, with the Fire traveling to Atlanta, Thursday, for an afternoon game.
All three schools hold their own destiny in their hands, win out the remaining games, and capture the No. 1 seed for the South Region Tournament.
If Southeastern and Atlanta Christian manage to split their games this week, then all three schools would end up tied, and then a tie breaker could get complicated.
However, some other South Region teams could have a say in breaking up the tie as well. Southeastern plays their final regular season game at Florida Christian College while Atlanta Christian hosts Clearwater Christian in their finale. Wesley may have to face the most dangerous team of all when they host Southeastern Bible College (Birmingham, AL) to end their regular season. All these games are scheduled for Saturday, February 20th.
Southeastern swept their regular season series with Southeastern Bible College, while Atlanta Christian split with SEBC. SEBC defeated Wesley, 81-74, earlier this month, in Birmingham, in the two schools only meeting so far this season.

In one of the most impressive performances in school history, Marshall scored a career-high 43 points and, many times throughout Tuesday night's game, looked like a man playing with boys.
Marshall scored 29 first-half points as he went 10-of-11 from the floor, including 5-for-5 beyond the three-point line. He also added four assists and three steals in the half.
Marshall helped the Fire build a 57-39 halftime lead as the team shot a remarkable 65% from the floor in the half.
In the second half, Clearwater Christian used an 18-8 run midway through the second half to close the Fire lead to just 12 points. But, once again, Marshall answered with a key three-point play at the 9:15 mark to put the game away for good.
Marshall finished the game 15-for-18 from the floor, 5-of-6 from three-point land, and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. He also recorded five rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Marshall has scored 93 points in his last three games and is averaging 31 points over that three-game span.
Bartow's Marlon Austin scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Kathleen's Thomas Williams finished with 12 points and five assists.
It was Southeastern's 15th straight victory over its South Region rivals.

Fire Falls To Southeastern Bible Despite Huge Comeback, 103-99
(11-21-08)
LAKELAND, Fla.--The Southeastern University men's basketball team nearly came from behind in the closing moments to pull out a miraculous comeback, Thursday night, but fell just short and lost to Southeastern Bible College, 103-99.
The Fire were down by 20 points in the second half, but closed to within just six points with 11:45 remaining. Southeastern Bible then pushed its lead back to 17 points with just 3:57 remaining, but again the Fire came storming back.
Southeastern (4-3) had gone on a 22-9 run to close out the game, cutting the lead to just three points with 17 seconds remaining, when Sergio Negrin drove inside, getting both the basket and the foul.
Negrin failed to convert the three-point play, however, and the Fire could not get any closer from there on in.
Southeastern Bible's Darryl Coates scored a game-high 35 points, and the Crusaders shot 49% from the floor for the game.
Senior point guard Sergio Negrin led the Fire with 24 points and 10 assists, while Marlon Austin added 18 points and four rebounds.
Kathleen graduate Thomas Williams scored 14 points, and freshman Malcolm Pollock added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Fire Rolls Past Florida Christian, 110-74
(11-18-08)
LAKELAND, Fla.--Southeastern freshman guard Marlon Austin scored a career high 33 points as the Fire dominated Florida Christian College, 110-74, in front of 1,100 Southeastern fans Tuesday night.
Florida Christian hung with the Fire for most of the first half, mostly because of Shane Smarr's 17 points. Smarr went 5-of-9 in the half from beyond the three-point line.
However, the Suns had no answer for Austin, who scored 18 first-half points to help Southeastern open up a 47-36 halftime lead.
The Fire defense then locked down Smarr in the second half, holding him to just three points while outscoring the Suns 62-38.
Austin, a graduate of Bartow High School, went 14-of-17 from the field and also had five steals and six rebounds in the game.

Fire Signs Two New Players
(05-22-08)
LAKELAND--Head Coach John Dunlap signed two new players Thursday, both of whom should give the Fire plenty of versatility going into next season.
The Fire has averaged over 25 wins the past four seasons, mostly due to Dunlap's ability to recruit talent. The beginning of this year's recruiting class seems to continue that pattern as the Fire landed Jordan Witte, a 6'2 point guard from Quincy, Illinois, and Malcolm Pollock, a 6'3 forward from Jasper, Florida.
Witte will bring size and depth to the Fire point guard position.
"Jordan has long range shooting ability and a good knowledge of running an offense, which will be a tremendous asset to our program," stated Dunlap.
Witte will graduate from Quincy Senior High School this spring, averaging 11.0 points and 4.0 assists his senior season there. He was a First Team Western Big Six selection, while also being named to the First Team of the Western Big Six's All-Academic team.
Witte could potentially play backup to senior point guard Sergio Negrin, who is coming back from a season-ending injury from a year ago.
"He also is fundamentally sound and possesses a high level of mental toughness," Dunlap added, referring to his new recruit.
Pollock will graduate from Hamilton County High School, also in the spring.
Pollock averaged 11.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game his senior season while also being named his team's most valuable player. He was also an All-Area Honorable Mention.
"Malcolm has athletic ability along with skills that enable him to score in a number of ways. His versatility will give the team a number of ways to utilize his talents," said Dunlap.
That versatility seems to have made an impression on the coaching staff, who noted that Pollock led his team in dunks his senior year despite playing the small forward position.
"He can defend on the perimeter or the post for us," added Dunlap.
That plays well for Pollock's future at Southeastern, as defense seems to be what Dunlap preaches the most at SEU. The Fire has been in the top five nationally the past five seasons in defensive field goal percentage, holding opposing teams last season to just 39.9% from the field.
The Fire will return at least seven players from last year's team, and the Fire coaching staff will continue to add more talent leading into the 2008-2009 season.
Galloway exceeds Expectations, Wins Second Straight South Region Player of the Year Award
(04-08-08)
LAKELAND--When Fire Head Coach John Dunlap landed local Polk County (Fla.) product Israel Gallloway back in 2004, he never thought he would turn into the two-time South Region Player of the Year.
Galloway was recently named the South Region Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He also was named an All-American First Team player for the second straight year.
When asked what he thought of Galloway coming in, Coach Dunlap responded quickly with one word: "Project." Dunlap added, "I liked the thought that he was a local kid and was playing at a high level in high school. I saw his defensive abilities, and with the team we had, that was one of the things we really needed."
And defense is what Coach Dunlap got from Galloway; over his four years, Galloway shattered every school record when it came to blocking shots, including a 13-block performance as a freshman versus Trinity College.
Coming out of nearby Lakeland Senior High School, Galloway was not heavily recruited and came to Southeastern because of his mother's influence in his life. Galloway's mother, Sybrena Galloway Lux, passed away in January, and Galloway credits his mother for getting him to come to Southeastern.
"She really pushed me to come to Southeastern," Galloway said. "I was looking at other schools, but she really wanted me to come here for the spiritual environment."
Good thing for Southeastern fans that Galloway did come to Southeastern. Over his four seasons at SEU, Galloway helped lead the Fire--as a freshman--to the 2005 NCCAA II National Championship. He also helped win over 100 games in his career.
Galloway leaves Southeastern as the school's third all-time leading scorer and the school's all-time leader in blocked shots.
Men's Basketball Season Likely Over
(02-29-08)
CLEARWATER--The Southeastern University men's basketball team's dream of competing for an NCCAA II National Championship could have come to an end, Friday night, as the Fire fell to No. 4 seed Atlanta Christian College, 84-68.
Southeastern defeated Atlanta Christian College twice during the regular season, but Friday night's game was never in doubt as the Chargers held SEU to just 33% shooting for the game.
Three Charger players scored 17 points: Reinaldo Reid, Chris Cooper, and Jamal Brunson, who also added 11 rebounds.
ACC took a 40-35 lead into halftime and built a 14-point lead with just 10:35 remaining in the game.
Southeastern battled back and was led by Lakeland's Israel Galloway, who finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
Freshman Nate Marshall added 18 points while Kathleen's Thomas Williams chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Fire cut the lead to 10 points with 3:54 remaining, but Atlanta Christian closed out the game on a 14-8 run and made clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
Now Southeastern, which finishes the year with a 24-10 overall record and a 13-3 South Region record, will need some help getting into the 2008 NCCAA II National Tournament in Springfield, Missouri, March 11-15.
The Chargers will play the winner of No. 1 seed Wesley College and No. 4 seed Clearwater Christian College, Saturday, at 3:00 p.m.
Wesley College is currently ranked the No. 1 team in the country and has locked in its ticket to the national tournament. Southeastern is now on the outside looking in, and could grab an at-large bid into the tournament, but with its loss to No. 3 seed ACC, the Fire could miss its first national tournament berth since 2003.
An Atlanta Christian win on Saturday would almost certainly cost the Fire a spot in the national tournament because the South Region Tournament winner automatically earns a bid into the tournament. Three teams from the same region have never made the national tournament in the same year.
The NCCAA II National Tournament field will be announced late Sunday night.

Galloway's mother recently passed away in January, and he credits his mother for getting him to come to Southeastern.
"She really pushed me to come to Southeastern. I was looking at other schools, but she really wanted me to come here for the spiritual environment," added Galloway.

Fire Falls To Piedmont College, 74-72
(01-04-08)
LAKELAND--With nearly three weeks off since their last game, the Southeastern University men's basketball team fell to Piedmont College (Demorest, Ga.) 74-72, Friday night, as the Fire committed 29 turnovers in the game.
SEU led for much of the game, but a late three-pointer by Piedmont's Michael Rubio tied the game at 69-69 with just under 1:30 remaining.
Southeastern's Thomas Williams hit one-of-two free throws to give the Fire a 70-69 lead, but Piedmont earned its first lead of the second half when Jake Green hit a pair of free throws on Piedmont's next possession, giving the Lions a 71-70 lead with just 25 seconds to go.
Then, another costly turnover and a foul by SEU put Rubio back on the line. He connected on two free throws, giving Piedmont a 73-70 lead.
Fire guard Sterling Brown then drove to the basket and was fouled with just nine seconds remaining. Brown converted both free throws, making the score 73-72.
Southeastern then fouled Piedmont's Samuel Coppage with eight seconds left and got what it was looking for as Coppage made only one-of-two free throws, keeping the game within reach for the Fire with the score at 74-72.
The Fire had a couple of good looks under the basket with time running out, but could not convert, and Southeastern now falls to 8-6 on the year.
Israel Galloway led the Fire with 21 points and six rebounds. Brown finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Anthony Turner added eight points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Southeastern will play Maryville College (Maryville, Tenn.) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Fire Falls To NCAA I Bethune-Cookman
(12-11-07)
DAYTONA BEACH--The Southeastern University men's basketball team was looking for its second victory over a NCAA D-I opponent Monday night, this time against Bethune-Cookman College.
The Fire jumped out to a 19-6 lead halfway through the first half, but in the end the Wildcats had just too many athletes and outscored the Fire, 37-21, in the second half to win 65-51.
SEU (7-5) took a 30-28 halftime lead into the locker room; the Fire did a good job defensively in the first half, holding BCC to just 33% shooting from the floor while the Fire shot 55%.
Once again the Fire was without two of its main point guards, Sergio Negrin and Matt Miller. But despite the lack of depth, the Fire handled BCC's pressure well enough to keep itself in the game.
Only one Fire player scored in double digits; Sterling Brown scored 10 points while grabbing four rebounds.
Anthony Turner added nine points off the bench and freshman Nate Marshall contributed eight points.
BCC held the Fire to just 28% shooting in the second half and outrebounded the Fire 37-26 for the game.

Fire Knocks Off No. 12 Warner Southern In Overtime
(12-10-07)
LAKELAND--After squandering a four-point field lead at the end of regulation, the Southeastern men's basketball team regrouped and defeated NAIA Warner Southern College, 99-96, in overtime in the final day of the Glen Karnes Memorial Tournament hosted by Southeastern University.
Warner Southern came into the 2007 Glen Karnes Memorial Tournament, 6-0, and ranked No. 12 in the nation for NAIA schools.
However, the Royals will most certainly be knocked out of the top-25 NAIA poll this week after falling to Emmanuel College on Friday night and then to SEU on Saturday.
SEU led 86-82 with just 15 seconds remaining in the game, but a three-point field goal by Warner Southern's Tommy Kleinshnitz cut the lead to one with under 10 seconds remaining.
Then, a Royal steal and a Southeastern foul put Warner Southern's Alex Castillo at the free throw line with 1.4 seconds remaining and a chance to win it for WSC.
But Castillo hit just one of two free throws, and the game went into overtime where the Fire outscored Warner Southern, 13-10; Fire freshman Nate Marshall sealed the game at the free-throw line.
Lakeland's Israel Galloway led the Fire with 23 points, five rebounds, and three blocks while Marshall finished with 18 points, going 9-for-12 at the charity stripe for the game. Marshall also added four assists and four steals.
Sterling Brown added 14 points while Thomas Williams and Fenny Falmagne both scored 10 points apiece.
Southeastern led 45-37 at halftime and did a good job handling the basketball despite not having one point guard on its roster available to play due to injuries or sickness.
Warner Southern's Brandon Hamilton and Preston Adams both scored 20 points apiece while Kleinshnitz finished with 17 points, connecting on four three-pointers.
Southeastern (7-4) will travel to Daytona Beach on Monday to play NCAA I Bethune-Cookman at 7:00 p.m.

St. Thomas's Antonio Jones scored a game-high 24 points while dishing out four assists.
Southeastern (6-4) was led by Sterling Brown's 14 points and three assists.

Fire Signs Polk County Standout
(07-12-07)
LAKELAND--Southeastern University signed former Lakeland Christian School star Matt Miller this past week, giving the Fire another Polk County standout on its roster.
Miller is a two-time Class 2A District 10 Player of the Year and averaged 18.6 points, 3.2 steals, and 5.5 assists per game last season. He was also named a Class 2A All-State Honorable Mention.
"He is not only talented, but has a very high level of understanding on how to play the game of basketball," said Fire Head Coach John Dunlap. "Matt is a natural leader and a winner, and we have just enhanced our program for the next four years by signing another local standout."
Coach Dunlap has often found success through recruiting local Polk County players.
In 2004, Dunlap signed former Lakeland High School player Israel Galloway. Galloway has been a three-year starter for the Fire and has led the nation in blocked shots three straight seasons.
Last year, Coach Dunlap landed Thomas Williams, who played his high school basketball at Kathleen High School.
Williams averaged 11.6 points per game last season and was named a Second Team All-Region player in his first year at SEU.
Dunlap also found success in signing former Lake Region player Sherman Merricks in 2001. Merricks finished his career at SEU as the school's all-time leader in assists and steals while leading the Fire to the 2005 NCCAA II National Championship.
Miller stands at 5'11 and can play both guard positions. He finished his career at LCS as the school's all-time leader in points, steals, and assists.
Fire Takes Fifth In the Nation With Win Over CBC
(03-10-07)
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK--Southeastern University finished up their season with a 62-61 victory over Central Bible College Saturday afternoon to take fifth place nationally in the NCCAA II National Tournament.
It was the Fire's second victory over the Spartans this season, the other victory a 74-56 win over CBC in the annual Assemblies of God Tournament in January.
SEU's top-five finish makes them the only NCCAA II team in the nation to finish in the top five nationally the past four seasons.
After trailing 46-38 with 13:37 remaining in the game, SEU Head Coach John Dunlap picked up a technical foul, which seemed to put a spark in the Fire for the rest of the game.
After the technical, Southeastern went on a 19-5 run and built a six-point lead with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Southeastern would never trail after that point.
The Fire men heated up in the second half, shooting 51% from the floor, mainly because they got the ball inside.
David Gaulman led the Fire offense with 16 points and nine rebounds.
South Region Player of the Year Israel Galloway added 15 points and 13 rebounds, bringing his national tournament average to 18.3 points per game.
Galloway was also named a First Team All-American, becoming the first SEU player to be named an All-American since Johnnie Grant in 2005.
CBC's Kendall Alfaro hit a huge three-pointer with just 57 seconds remaining to cut SEU's lead to 59-58, but senior Matt Powell iced the game down the stretch, hitting some clutch free throws to seal the victory for the Fire.
CBC's Arjay Johnson scored 16 points and added six assists, while Alfaro finished the game with 13 points for the Spartans.
Southeastern finishes their season with a 26-12 record, giving the Fire five straight seasons with at least 20 wins.
Also, Danny Rohrdanz and Matt Powell were recognized for their accomplishments on the court and in the classroom, both being named 2007 National Scholar Athletes.

(03-09-07)

The Fire also did a nice job of protecting the basketball, as Sterling Brown dished out nine assists with just two turnovers while Brad Augustine, coming off the bench, added eight assists with no turnovers. The Fire committed just 12 turnovers for the game.
Southeastern (25-12) will play Central Bible College for the second straight year in the national tournament, facing the Spartans Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The winner will take fifth place overall for the national tournament.

SEU Falls To Mid-America Christian, 76-71
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK--No. 5 seed and tournament host Mid-America Christian University defeated Southeastern University 76-71 Thursday night in the quarter-finals of the NCCAA II Men's Basketball National Tournament, ending SEU's dreams of winning the NCCAA II National Championship this year.
Now the highest SEU can place in the national tournament is fifth overall, and their next step toward that goal is the game against No. 8 seed Multnomah Bible College Friday at 2:00 p.m.
SEU (24-12) led 36-34 at halftime, but Mid-America went on a 10-0 run halfway through the second half to open up a 67-59 lead with just 4:20 remaining in the game. Mid-America would never surrender the lead from that point on.
In the second half, the Evangels out-rebounded the Fire 20-11 and shot 51% from the floor to advance to the NCCAA II Final Four.
Mid-America's Stevan Thomas's racked up 18 points and six rebounds on the night. Stuart Payne added 12 second-half points, and Andre McCoy dished out 12 assists.
South Region Player of the Year Israel Galloway led SEU with 25 points on the night and hit some big shots down the stretch to keep the Fire in the game.
Trailing 74-71 with 19 seconds left in the game, SEU's Thomas Williams set up Fire sharp-shooter Brent Dillard for a game-tying three-pointer, but Dillard's shot was off the mark, allowing the Evangels to ice the game at the free-throw line.
Williams finished with eight points and five assists for SEU.
Mid-America will play No. 1 seed Wesley College on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. The winner of that game will play in the NCCAA II National Championship game Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.

SEU Falls To Wesley College in Championship Game
(02-24-07)
TOCCOA FALLS, GA--No. 1 ranked Southeastern University fell to No.3 Wesley College, Saturday afternoon, in the NCCAA II South Region Championship game, 78-75.
The Fire controlled the game throughout, but Wesley's Stephen Smith hit a three-pointer with 1:45 remaining to give Wesley a 74-71 lead.
Trailing, 76-75, with 20 seconds in the game, the Fire got the ball with a chance to win, but Wesley managed to get a huge steal, and hit two free-throws to take a, 78-75, lead after an intentional foul was called.
With seven seconds remaining, SEU's Sterling Brown got a steal at halfcourt, then passed to senior Matt Powell who tried to tie the game with a three-point attempt, but his shot missed and Southeastern fell to Wesley for the second time this season.
Terrance Robinson carried Wesley with 21 points connecting on four three-point field goals. Smith finished with 16 points and four rebounds.
Southeastern (23-12) was looking for their fourth straight South Region Championship and sixth in seven years, but will have to settle for an at-large bid into the 2007 NCCAA II National Tournament, March 6-10th, in Oklahoma City, OK.
Israel Galloway and Brown both finished with 14 points apiece for the Fire. Kathleen's Thomas Williams finished with 12 points and seven assists for SEU.

Fire Advances To South Region Championship Game
(02-23-07)
TOCCOA FALLS, GA--No. 1 ranked Southeastern University advanced to the NCCAA II South Region Championship game with a 77-68 victory over rival Clearwater Christian College, Friday night.
The Fire has owned the series with Clearwater Christian over the past four seasons, winning 11 straight games versus the Cougars heading into Friday night's game.
Southeastern has also owned the South Region of late, winning five of the past six South Region Championships.
But, the Cougars came out strong again against SEU and controlled most of the first half until SEU looked to junior guard Danny Rohrdanz off the bench. Rohrdanz gave SEU some much needed outside shooting, hitting two three-point field goals before the end of the half to give SEU a 34-33 halftime lead.
More importantly, Rohrdanz shooting opened up things inside for South Region Player of the Year, Isreal Galloway.
Galloway led the Fire with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots. David Gaulman added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Clearwater Christian used a 2-3 zone the entire game to try to slow down Southeastern's quick guards.
But it has been SEU's defense all season that has made the difference. The Fire lead the nation in defensive field goal percentage, but seemed to struggle against Clearwater Christian's Lonzo Saunders in the regular season. Saunders scored over 20 points in both regular season matchups with SEU, but the Fire held him scoreless Friday night.
The Fire bench came up big Friday night also, scoring 33 points combined.
Jordan McKenna finished with 11 points, Rohrdanz finished with nine, and forward Hussein Ali contributed eight points and four rebounds off the bench for the Fire.
Southeastern (23-11) will face the winner of Wesley College (Florence, MS) and Piedmont Baptist College (Winston-Salem, NC) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
With a win Saturday, SEU would lockup a first-round bye in the NCCAA II National Tournament, and possibly earn the No.1 seed overall.
SEU won the NCCAA II National Tournament in 2005 when they were the No.1 seed. The NCCAA II National Tournament will take place March 6-10th, in Oklahoma City, OK.

Fire Ranked No. 1, Again!
(01-31-07)
LAKELAND--Fresh off its 71-70 victory over Clearwater Christian College, Tuesday night, the Southeastern University men's basketball team got even better news Wednesday morning when the team found itself ranked No.1 in the country in the latest NCCAA II poll.
The NCCAA II poll consists of eight votes from eight different regional chairs from around the country. The Fire received three first-place votes while Wesley College (Florence, Miss.) and Cincinnati Christian University (Cincinnati, Ohio) both received two first place votes. Kentucky Christian University (Grayson, Ky.) received the other first place vote.
SEU is currently 14-10 on the year and 7-1 in the South Region overall. The Fire has key wins over two top-10 teams: Wesley College and Valley Forge Christian College (Phoenixville, Pa.) . However, SEU's most impressive victory of the year is its 71-61 win over NAIA Warner Southern College (Lake Wales, Fla.). WSC is in first place atop the Florida Sun Conference standings.
This marks the third straight year that the Southeastern University men's basketball team has been ranked No. 1 in the country for at least one week.
Southeastern's next game will be Friday night when SEU takes on Carver Bible College for homecoming. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

In the 2005 South Region championship game, CCC led SEU by 20 points with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. SEU stormed back, and Joey Gunter made a jumper in the lane at the buzzer, giving SEU an 84-82 victory over CCC.

Galloway, Fire Continue To Dominate in 94-57 Win
(01-22-07)
LAKELAND--The Southeastern University Fire came out hot versus Toccoa Falls College on Saturday, winning easily, 94-57, behind Israel Galloway's 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks.
Galloway has been playing as well as he ever has since coming to SEU, and that is saying a lot, for Galloway was a key member of SEU's national championship team in 2005.
"Honestly, it is the guards," said Galloway. "They got that confidence in me right now, and it has been working for us."
Galloway scored 30 points, Thursday night, versus No.1 Wesley College, and his dominating presence inside is one of the reasons why SEU has won eight of its last 10 games.
"We are better defensively than that team (national champion), a lot better," added Galloway.
Galloway once again leads the nation in blocked shots, something he has done every year since coming to Southeastern in the fall of 2004.
He is Southeastern's all-time leader in blocked shots, setting that mark as a sophomore.
Kiel Walker also had a nice game with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Kathleen Senior High School alumnus (Lakeland, Fla.) Thomas Williams, SEU's leading scorer, added 15 points while Hussein Ali contributed 12 points off the bench for the Fire.
Southeastern Head Coach John Dunlap played all of his players, and no SEU player played over 20 minutes in the game, as the Fire improved to 12-9 overall and 5-1 in the South Region.
The Fire defense held TFC to just 24% shooting for the game and outrebounded the smaller Toccoa Falls squad, 61-30, for the game.
SEU will next play Tuesday night at home versus Trinity College (New Port Richey, Fla.). Game time is 7:00 p.m.
Fire Defeats No.1 Wesley College, 83-76

Southeastern led 39-30 at halftime, but Wesley started off the second half on a 9-0 run to tie the game 39-39.
Wesley's tough man-to-man defense forced 31 Southeastern turnovers, but SEU managed to shoot 56% from the floor for the game and improves to 11-9 on the season.
But the Fire just would not be denied. SEU opened up a 66-60 lead with just under five minutes remaining and never looked back, making some key free throws down the stretch.
Thursday night's victory avenged a 75-72 loss to Wesley College in November.
In the latest NCCAA II polls, Wesley College was ranked No.1 nationally, and SEU was ranked No.3 nationally.
Jordan McKenna scored 17 points off the bench while Thomas Williams pitched in with 15 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

North Central (Minneapolis, Minn.) outscored SEU, 43-35, in the second half and forced 24 Fire turnovers for the game.

Southeastern (7-8) trailed only 30-29 at halftime, thanks mostly to its tough defense that held UT to just 34% shooting in the first half.
Thomas Williams led the Fire in the first half with nine points and three assists.
Tampa would then outscore SEU, 34-21, in the second half. The Fire had its chances in the second half and could not capitilize.

In the second half, Lakeland graduate Israel Galloway began to take the game over. Galloway grabbed seven rebounds and blocked six shots in the second half, helping Southeastern keep Paukovitz scoreless in the second half. Galloway finished the game with seven points, 11 rebounds, and nine blocks.
Southeastern (22-11) found itself trailing 41-37 in the second half but managed to take over from there, going on a 9-0 run in the middle of the second half sparked by tough man-to-man and zone defense.
