Biography
Dr. Sheila Abraham grew up and completed most of her education in Hyderabad, a city in southern India, but came to the United States to earn a PhD in entomology, which she received in 2006 from Kansas State University. Her research focused on the physiological and molecular processes in the digestive tract of beetles that feed on stored food products; she studied protease enzymes in the guts of Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworms). Dr. Abraham has presented her research at a number of professional conferences, receiving—among other awards and scholarships—first place in the Eugene Dehner Award. She also has refereed publications in the Bioinoculants for Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry and Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society.

Though Dr. Abraham helped teach Insect Biological Control and General Entomology while at Kansas State and delivered guest lectures in zoology and entomology, she says that the freedom to integrate biology and faith at Southeastern has been “a blessing and my heart’s desire.” In her classes, especially the ecology labs, she sees herself as leading her students in the exploration of the wonders and complexities of God's creation. She would like her students to see that science can be worship, too.

At Southeastern, Dr. Abraham teaches the following classes: Life Science, Zoology, Ecology, Bioethics, and Cell and Molecular Biology. Her research interests include life science, medical entomology, vector biology, insect physiology, and scriptural references to animals and insects.
