Biography
Dr. Norm Holland brings to Southeastern a wealth of experience and a depth of knowledge in chemistry and pharmacology. He has been teaching at least part-time since the mid-1980s and is very much dedicated to the success of students, especially their preparation for work-life readiness.

Most of Dr. Holland’s time in graduate school was devoted to the study of pain and principles of pain management, including spinal mechanisms of pain and the neurotransmitters involved in communicating higher signals to the brain. Most of his practical experience dealt with peptides, immunocytochemistry, and various bench tools used by scientists in the field. In addition, for two years Dr. Holland worked at the VA Hospital studying opiate abstinence and morphine withdrawal. These academic experiences culminated in Dr. Holland’s doctoral dissertation, A Study of Substance P in the Dorsal Horn: Involvement in Phasic and Tonic Nociception. Several of his doctoral and postdoctoral publications are found in Brain Research, Neuropharmacology, and the Elsevier publication, Pain.

Today, Dr. Holland writes pharmacology textbooks and works as a consultant when the opportunity arises. Several of his works are nationally recognized books, including Core Concepts in Pharmacology and Pharmacology for Nurses, a Pathophysiologic Approach, both texts in their second edition. His work with textbooks underscores his ability and desire to communicate the concepts of his field clearly and systematically to his students. Finally, Dr. Holland brings to Southeastern a passion for “finding and connecting with people who have a heart for knowing, being prepared for, and doing the will of God.”

Dr. Holland teaches the following courses: Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Anatomy and Physiology, Life Origins, Fundamentals of Biology, Bioethics, General Chemistry, Zoology, Ecology, and Special Topics in Biochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. His research interests are in the area of drug development and business–maybe even starting up his own drug company–and he would like to disseminate his pharmacology literature in an online format.
