Biography
Before coming to Southeastern in 2007, Jeff Smith taught first at Mississippi College and then in Knoxville, TN, where he taught composition and literature at Maryville College, Pellissippi State Technical Community College, and Walters State Community College. Having taught at both private, Christian colleges and public institutions, Smith has learned to adapt his style of teaching to various student needs and personalities, his success in the classroom confirmed by, among other things, his winning of the Teaching Assistant of the Year Award from the Mississippi College Department of English in 2004.

Smith has a passion for literature studies as exhibited by his Master’s thesis, which focused on the gothic works of Sheridan Le Fanu. He also presented a paper at the Nineteenth-Century Literature Conference at the University of South Carolina in 2003. He utilizes his time away from the classroom to continue his literary research for both personal edification and future conference presentations and publications. Smith also aspires to continue his academic development by studying for a PhD in literature.

Smith teaches Composition I & II and Introduction to Literature. His research interests are British and German romanticism, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century gothic literature, and Victorian fantasy and fairy tale.
