Department of Natural Sciences & Mathematics
Abortion, cloning, mapping the human genome, and the creation vs. evolution debate are public issues—rooted in biology—that have gripped the nation. The Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics teaches students about the beauty, purpose and intricacies of nature but also explores the ethical and moral dilemmas that often accompany scientific discovery. Students may study and major in biology, biology/pre-med. or mathematics through the department.
TEACHERS, DOCTORS & MENTORS
Southeastern’s Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics faculty members bring a wide range of qualifications to the biology program, striving to provide you with an environment that will allow you to formulate a biblical worldview against which your ideas and decisions can be tested. Among the biology faculty, Dr. Holland has his PhD in pharmacology; Dr. Schraw holds a PhD in molecular and cell biology, Dr. Abraham a PhD in entomology, Dr. Day-Storms a PhD in biological chemistry, and Dr. McConchie a PhD in life science. This faculty gives the program both depth and breadth.
Beyond their estimable knowledge and skill and their varied professional experience, each faculty member in the biology program also has a genuine love of teaching, as well as an interest in your intellectual and spiritual development. Because our program is small, your professors work with you individually, helping you discern your calling and career step by step and assisting you in planning an appropriate course of study while you’re at Southeastern. If you plan to further your studies after graduation, your biology professors are happy to guide you through the process of applying to professional and graduate schools.
