BECOMING A BRIDGE
You may have to counsel a woman who feels trapped in an abusive relationship. Or coordinate efforts to help the children of migrant workers weather changes in schools, neighborhoods, or families. As a social worker you’ll need the problem-solving, interpersonal, and management skills to aid and advise others—be it personally, relationally or in their communities. Southeastern’s bachelor of social work program will equip you with knowledge, skills, and experience to become a successful social worker who can meet people’s needs in the spirit of Christ.

OUR FOUNDATION
Southeastern’s social work program begins with our Christ-centered liberal arts (general education) core curriculum, where you develop an understanding and appreciation of God and His creation, human creativity and reason, and our place of responsibility as stewards in the world God has made. As you forge links between what you’ve learned in the core and the more specialized courses in your major, our hope is that you also begin to relate all that you learn to your life and your faith.

In the bachelor of social work program itself, you’ll first receive an introduction to social work to help you assess whether this helping profession is the right career for you. We’ll expose you to the values, beliefs, and skills you’ll need to flourish in the field. As a new social work major you’ll also shadow a social worker so you’ll see case management firsthand; not only will you observe clients, but the paper work social workers must handle, too. Later in the program, you’ll take courses that teach you how to help others plot change in their lives, families, organizations, and communities. You’ll study the history of the U.S. social welfare system and learn how economics intersects with people’s lives. Before graduating, you’ll also study research methods and complete 450 hours interning at local, social service agencies.

SOCIAL WORK AND SOUTHEASTERN
Besides teaching you how to meet people’s needs in the spirit of Christ, our professors will mentor you in a field that has ardently secular values. You’ll learn to practice social work confidently despite the view that social workers can’t both hold strong religious convictions and advise clients in a non-judgmental manner. At Southeastern we believe that because we’re committed to serving God, we’re more motivated to serving those who have a special place in His heart—the dispossessed, the orphans, and the poor.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Southeastern’s bachelor of social work will prepare you for case management positions in a myriad of settings. This degree also meets one of the main requirements of becoming a licensed social worker in many states. Our bachelor’s program also prepares you for graduate work in social work, counseling, public health, and public administration. If you decide to earn a master’s degree in social work, our bachelor’s program, which is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), qualifies you to skip—and gain credit for—the first year of two-year, master of social work programs. This aspect of our program will save you time and thousands of dollars.
