A HIGHER DEGREE OF SERVICE
For many teachers, earning a master's degree isn't an option, it's required. For private and public school teachers, it's a logical choice that could lead to a raise. Yet the idea of sitting in a graduate classroom, after spending all day teaching, may be less than appealing. At Southeastern University, our professors sympathize. They have years of teaching experience themselves. By offering a master's degree in elementary education, our goal is to create a welcoming environment where educators meet to recharge and refresh. We want teachers to look at earning a master's degree not as a tedious requirement, but as a chance to pursue a higher degree of service.

NATIONAL BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS CERTIFICATION
Many schools in central Florida offer a master's degree in education, but Southeastern is the only Christian university that prepares teachers to earn National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification. Our experienced faculty members have designed a degree that readies teachers for the national board test while remaining relevant to their daily classroom experiences. The 33-36-hour program can be completed in as few as 18 months.

OUR PROGRAM
Our degree is ideal for teachers who have been working for several years and are ready to commit to a vigorous graduate program. Up to six credits may be transferred from another institution. Once enrolled at Southeastern, you'll take three six-week courses each semester with a group of roughly 15 students. Classes convene on weeknights or Saturdays at our Lakeland, Florida, campus. Over the summer, you'll complete three intensive, two-week classes. During the final fall semester, you’ll write a thesis or prepare a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards portfolio and review for the national board exam.
Although our program is primarily designed for teachers who are already state-certified, Southeastern also equips professionals who want to change careers and become teachers. Our master’s program plus three undergraduate courses will lead to teacher certification in elementary education in Florida.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
According to the National Education Association, U.S. school districts will hire two million additional teachers by 2020. Southeastern is committed to producing caring teachers who, inspired by their love for Christ, will positively influence their students’ lives. Our College of Education has earned high praise from the state of Florida for contributing to the success of schools in central Florida. Like our undergraduate education program, our master's degree addresses the changing needs of students. In addition to brushing up on the latest math and reading methods, we'll prepare you for diverse classrooms. Every methods course covers how to meet the needs of students learning English as a second language and other special-needs learners. You’ll be able to take what you learn at night and apply it at school the next day.

At Southeastern, we realize teachers have different reasons for earning a master's degree—not every private school lets teachers exchange a master's diploma for a handsome raise. But whether you teach the only third-grade at a Christian academy or one of eight kindergartens in a crowded public school, your degree will prove valuable in the classroom. If God has called you to teach—and serve—at a higher degree, come to Southeastern.
